How Birdies4Becca Came About.
In June of 2020 Becca Mullins was starting out to live her best life. She had recently graduated from nursing school and was at the start of her career, being a registered nurse, which she has wanted to do ever since she was in preschool. Her and her boyfriend, Erich, were beginning a life together and had recently purchased their first home. One month later, July 2020, Becca had swelling and severe pain in her clavicle. She decided to go to the emergency room and have it looked at. It was the beginning of the COVID pandemic so she had to go by herself, which did not sit well with her mom and dad, but they had to do what they had to do. After examining Becca, the hospital staff informed her they thought she had Leukemia and needed to be transferred to a hospital with a cancer ward for immediate treatment.
The next morning Becca was transferred to University Hospital Rainbows Babies and Children Hospital. Even though she was a legal adult, due to her age, 22, and the cancer she had was considered a childhood cancer, this would be best treated at the child hospital. Becca was diagnosed with B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). To make it even worse, later it was determined the she had a mutation of the cancer cell DNA, which is called the Philadelphia Chromosome, that made it more resistant to chemotherapy. The final diagnosis was Philadelphia Positive B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
This is where Becca and her mother, Michelle, met Dr. Rachel Egler, MD. and the wonderful nurses and staff of the 7th floor. Becca and Michelle's home away from home for the long and arduous 2 year treatment.
A couple weeks after her diagnosis, family friends, Mike Burgess and Traci Veach, approached Becca's parents and asked if they could do a golf outing to help raise money for Becca's bills. The family agreed and Birdies4Becca was born and would be played on the weekend of Becca's birthday in September. Within 4 days of the word getting out about the golf outing, it was completely sold out. 18 holes with two 4person teams on each. The golf course had to rent additional golf carts to accommodate us. The love and support was overwhelming and the first Birdies4Becca golf outing was a huge success. Not only did the golfers show, the volunteers, the raffle prizes and the donations were unbelievable.
The family and Becca decided to make this event an annual one. It became so popular that we had to move it to another golf course with 36 holes. We still to this day sell out all 36 holes and have most holes with two 4person teams on each. We have heard from many people who have participated, it is the best outing they have ever been in and look forward to it every year. We have raised a lot of money for Becca to help with medical bills and everyday expenses so she did not have to worry about those things and could concentrate on kicking cancer's ass. Not only has Becca used this money, but multiple times, while admitted to the hospital going through this horrible treatment, she has used this money for others. She has supported programs, hospital and private, that are close to her heart and has been instrumental in her physical and mental care and donated to families who did not have the means or support she had received over the treatment cycle.
Becca entered a deep remission of the cancer is 2023 and is still giving. Read HER STORY the complete story of Becca's journey. She charged our family and friends to continue the Birdies4Becca Golf outing to raise awareness and provide much needed funds for the multiple programs that assist children and families with cancer and for families in need.
